Afterschool programs offer enriching opportunities
in Amsterdam, Fort Plain, Gloversville and Johnstown

A grant writing team - headed by HFM BOCES Assistant Superintendent Dominick Baggetta - spearheaded a successful effort to bring federal funding for 21st Century Afterschool Learning Centers into Fulton and Montgomery counties. The new grants were implemented in 2004 in Amsterdam, Fort Plain and Gloversville, while Johnstown was added last fall.

The program, geared for middle school students, provides an extension to the school day that is educational, recreational and most importantly safe for our students. Operating daily from the close of the school day until 5:15 p.m., participants are offered similar daily opportunities in all four districts. All sites provide learning opportunities that interconnect their activities with the regular school day program.

All sites offer the following:

Homework assistance and guidance,

Tutoring in specific subject areas,

Academic enrichment,

Computer time,

Daily snacks,

Recreational opportunities,

Links with more than 30 community agencies that provide expertise in diverse areas, and

Cultural enrichment.

Students at all four sites also participate in field trips, including a tour of the HFM BOCES Career and Technical Center in Johnstown where students are exposed to career opportunities and alternative courses of study beyond the high school offerings in their home districts. Students have also participated in team-building activities at the Adirondack Center in Ephratah.

Program co-directors Art Batty and Ernie Clapper oversee the day-to-day operations of the after-school programs. Average attendance varies by site, with a range of 40-80 students per day.
