Student Earns Top State Award
Rosa Rivera of Amsterdam has been selected as an Outstanding
Adult Student award recipient for 2007 by the New York
Association of Continuing/Community Education (NYACCE).
Ms. Rivera began her studies through the HFM BOCES Office of
Adult Literacy in September 2005 by enrolling in an English
as a Second Language class and a basic skills class,
occupying three nights a week. At the same time, she
enrolled in the Business Computer Applications program at
the HFM Career and Technical Center five days a week. She
completed her ESL and Business Computer Applications classes
in summer 2006. This fall, she enrolled in the adult GED
preparation program and the Medical Assisting program at HFM
BOCES.
Adult literacy program coordinator Laurie Bargstedt
nominated Ms. Rivera for the award, recognizing the
significant sacrifices she made and challenges she overcame
while maintaining her family obligations and employment.
"Rosa has shown great determination and perseverance toward
the personal and employment goals she has set for herself."
Ms. Bargstedt said. "In doing so, she hopes to demonstrate
to her children the value of education and the importance of
persistence. Rosa hopes to use her bilingual skills,
combined with her computer and medical skills, in her job
search when she completes her training in early June. "
Ms. Rivera, along with approximately 10 other adult learners
from across New York State who were also chosen to receive
this award, will be honored at a dinner in Albany on March
6. On March 7, they will participate in a tour of the New
York State Capitol, with visits to their elected officials.
