Utica University to Conduct Virtual Info Sessions for Teacher Apprenticeship Program

Have you always wanted a career in the classroom? HFM BOCES and Utica University have partnered to address the ongoing teacher shortage across New York State, and will conduct a series of virtual information sessions for individuals interested in pursuing a fast-tracked teaching certification.

Through the new ‘Teacher Apprenticeship Program’, individuals can earn a fast-tracked teacher certification in just eight short months and become a teacher of record in a school district by September 2024.

The first virtual information session regarding the Teacher Apprenticeship Program will take place on Nov. 29 at 7:00 p.m. Those interested in joining should email John Rowe, Executive Director of Graduate Admissions at Utica University, at jrowe@utica.edu to confirm your attendance.

The Apprenticeship Transitional B program is a 38 credit hour graduate program of study designed for candidates who possess a bachelor’s degree (BA/BS) with a minimum 3.0 GPA in the following high-need areas: Earth Science, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Math, Spanish, French, English, Social Studies, and Technology.

The New York State Education Department (NYSED) Transition B program is designed to address the severe and ongoing shortage of certified teachers across the state. In response, NYSED has agreed to award qualified graduate teacher education candidates a Transitional B Teaching Certificate. According to Gov. Kathy Hochul’s office, New York State is facing a steep teacher retirement cliff in the coming years. The state needs approximately 180,000 new teachers over the next decade to meet workforce needs.

Additionally, Utica University will hold virtual sessions to discuss the popular Apprenticeship fast-track program on Dec. 6 and Dec. 13 at 7:00p.m. For more information or to confirm your attendance, please email John Rowe at jrowe@utica.edu.
