10th grade students from HFM PTECH put a charge in their learning last Friday at the National Grid Schenectady headquarters.

The students, along with hundreds more from school districts throughout the Capital District,  visited more than a dozen stations where National Grid workers showcased their skills and guided them through exercises ranging from handling live wires to operating heavy equipment during the company’s annual Touch-a-Truck and Career Day.

The event coincided with National Grid’s Day of Service, an annual event that’s part of the company’s Project C, a community commitment initiative to strengthen the communities where National Grid employees live and work.

PTECH students were also made aware of the variety of careers National Grid hires workers for, including fields like electrical trades, building trades, heavy equipment, HVAC, automotive trades, and more.

Brandon Otto, a PTECH student from Gloversville, said he enjoyed attending the event.

“This was a fun, educational event. I’ve learned a lot of different things about how National Grid operates,” he said.

Alison Strumbrice, also from Gloversville, said the event gave her a better understanding of how National Grid operates.

“It’s been pretty fun today. I’ve learned that there are a lot of different jobs within National Grid and that they all work together,” said Strumbrice.

According to the National Grid website, the company employs 17,000 people and is one of the largest investor-owned energy companies in the US – serving more than 20 million people throughout New York and Massachusetts.
