HFM Career and Technical Center Director Jay A. DeTraglia has earned statewide recognition from the New York State Association of Career and Technical Educators.
Jay A. DeTraglia has been named the 2018 Career and Technical Education Administrator of the Year by the New York State Association of Career and Technical Educators..
Noting his hard work and dedication, the association has named DeTraglia the 2018 Career and Technical Education Administrator of the Year.
“Mr. DeTraglia’s leadership has been outstanding. He has worked diligently to create the premier Career and Technical Education program in New York State, and due to his leadership, our programs have been recognized on the state and national levels,” HFM BOCES District Superintendent Dr. Patrick Michel said.
DeTraglia said the award reflects the hard work and professionalism of the Career and Technical Center’s teachers and staff.
“This recognition is about the team we have at the Career and Technical Center. We have tremendous teachers and staff, who are focused on student achievement and growth. This award truly recognizes the educational environment we have created,” DeTraglia said.
DeTraglia has been the director of the Career and Technical Center since 2005. As director, he oversees a program that offers 16 Career and Technical pathways for high school juniors and seniors from the 15 component school districts in the Hamilton-Fulton-Montgomery BOCES area. This year, more than 560 students are enrolled in the program.
DeTraglia says successful partnerships with local high schools and the business community are crucial to the success of students at the Career and Technical Center.
“We have fostered positive relationships with our component school districts, and they are very supportive of our programs,” DeTraglia said. “Our partnerships with the Fulton-Montgomery Chamber of Commerce, Fulton Montgomery Community College, and the local business community also play an important role in student success.”
Each year, approximately 225 local businesses provide work experience or internships for BOCES students, and nearly 50 local businesses are on HFM Career and Technical advisory councils. Last year, 98 percent of seniors enrolled in an HFM Career and Technical program graduated high school on time with 73 percent of the graduates having gone on to post-secondary education, 23 percent entering the workforce and 4 percent joining the military.
“Your hard work and dedication to the field of Career and Technical Education is extraordinary and we would like to take this opportunity to honor you for it. Your dedication to your students, profession and NYSACTE are truly remarkable,” the NYSACTE Awards Committee co-chairs Constance Costley and Michael Woods said in a letter announcing the award.
DeTraglia is a graduate of Fonda-Fultonville High School. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Siena College before earning a master’s degree in Educational Administration from the State University of New York at Albany. Prior to joining HFM, DeTraglia taught high school English in the Wells Central School District and was an elementary and high school principal in the Fonda-Fultonville Central School District.
