A Beacon of Knowledge: Celebrating the HFM School Library System

April 4, 2025 | Filed in Archive, HFM Top Stories

In recognition of National School Library Month, HFM BOCES proudly shines a spotlight on its School Library System (SLS) and the pivotal role it plays in the academic and personal growth of students and educators across the region. This April marks a time to reflect on the immense value of school libraries and the unsung heroes behind them.

At the heart of the HFM BOCES region, the SLS thrives as a central pillar of education, fostering curiosity, innovation, and exploration through its robust network of resources. Under the guidance of Director Kristi Beedon, the system continues to serve as a dynamic hub for learning.

“Our Instructional Resource Center (IRC) library is instrumental in academic success, nurturing a love for reading while equipping students with essential 21st-century skills,” explained Beedon during a 2024 interview. From curriculum-aligned print and digital materials to cutting-edge tools for creative discovery, the IRC library is designed to nurture informed, well-rounded individuals prepared to tackle the world.

Among the offerings is SORA, a free digital/audiobook platform that empowers K-12 students to access over 6,500 e-books, 400 magazines, 800 audiobooks, and even 2,000 comic books. Through initiatives like the “New York Reads” collection, which includes over 2600 e-books and 700 audio books available for simultaneous use, SORA ensures equitable access to high-quality materials, leveling the playing field for all students, regardless of background or location.

“SORA grants smaller schools access to an extensive and varied collection of books, promoting inclusivity and a passion for reading.” Beedon shared.

Beyond books, the IRC library invites students into the exciting world of hands-on learning with its Makerspace kits. These kits encourage creativity and critical thinking through activities in robotics, coding, circuitry, and more—igniting passions for STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics).

The underlying mission of the HFM School Library System is clear: to provide every student with equitable access to resources that inspire growth, exploration, and success. Beedon underscores this commitment: “Through books, digital tools, and hands-on projects, we strive to ensure every student has equal opportunities to learn and succeed.”

As we celebrate National School Library Month, it’s important to acknowledge the profound impact of school libraries not only in shaping academic journeys but also in enriching lives. From their beginnings in 1983 to the first official celebration in April 1985, School Library Month has grown into a national tribute to the transformative power of libraries and their role in education.
